About the PosterIf you are reading this, you more than likely know the story behind it but… when Bill Graham was presented with the first 100 copies, he informed the artist Peter Bailey to remove his credits. Very few, perhaps no one, imagined that these posters would someday be valuable as they were accepted as to their purpose of being a cheap way of advertising the first of what would become weekly offerings of Fillmore concerts. They would be attached to telephone poles, bulletin boards, etc. for one week and then disposed of and replaced with next week’s listing of performing artists. As such, these early posters were seldom saved or preserved. Those that were taken home were generally tacked up on walls at home. These first set of posters were printed on cheap paper with cheap ink. If either paper or ink ran short, they would simply replace them with whatever they had in stock.
As such, this poster is in my opinion the rarest of the Fillmore poster set probably followed by BG-2. My best guess is that only 50 or less still exist today. There are probably around 25 complete Fillmore poster sets further limiting availability of this poster.
There can only be one first and this is the first of the first.
Graders Notes:
Back Cover Small Multiple Tape Pull
Full Left Front Cover Moderate Creasing Breaks Color
Full Right Front Cover Moderate Creasing Breaks Color
Left Center Front Cover Small Multiple Tear
Right Center Front Cover Small Tear
When CGC says “moderate” or “small”, they mean it! I can only see the ‘tape pull’ when holding up to the light which show a slight shadow. I was able to locate one small tear on the left side at the top of the red stripe. But as it does not show through when holding up to a light it looks more like an ink print error. I think that the same is true of the right center area in the middle of the red stripe. Have a little fun and try to locate these items.
This poster looks much better than the grade, but that is their grade.
Date of Performance: February 4- 6, 1966.
Performing Artists:
Jefferson Airplane
Artist: Peter Bailey
** This poster is graded 6.0 under CGC Universal grade and is sealed in heavy gauge archival plastic for protection.
CGC employs a 10-point grading scale for concert posters that is based on the industry standard the company established for comics, magazines, photos and lobby cards. The CGC grade appears on one of a number of colored labels, which differentiate a CGC Universal Grade from CGC grades assigned with any qualifiers or special considerations, including conservation, restoration and signed pieces.
CGC-graded concert posters are sealed in tamper-evident holders of a heavy gauge archival plastic. The fully transparent front and back allows complete viewing of the poster and protects from any improper handling or soiling.
These posters were very cheaply made; especially the earlier ones. Bill Graham never envisioned that they would someday become collector items. They were intended to be posted on walls, telephone poles, etc. to advertise that week’s performing artists only to be torn down, discarded and replaced next week with a new poster for the next show. As such, maintaining them in ‘pristine’ condition is an on-going challenge.
I have gone through great lengths to insure that
my
posters have been maintained using only archival materials. I have preserved them on acid free paper mounted by protective corners stored flat in binders. On most of the photos of posters that I will be offering you may notice these corner protectors.
