    Description

    Souvenir medallion, issued to commemorate service with the U. S. Army along the Mexican border, during the 1916-1917 period when we were dealing with incursions by Pancho Villa and others, caused by one of the revolutionary periods Mexico underwent periodically.  32mm, struck in Copper, the same dies used for the official U. S. Army Mexican Border Service Medal established 1918.  The Army Medal was issued on a green/yellow ribbon and pinbar, and can be found as an original issue with serial number traceable to specific serviceman, as well as an official reissue or replacement medal.  The Army Medals are struck on a thinner planchet with included loop, and generally have a lighter brassy yellow finish. The souvenir medallions were presumably issued as a pocket piece similar to today's "challenge coins", and come in at least two distinct diameters and weight ranges.  This is the lighter of the two, at about 14.2 Grams avg., 31.5mm diameter.  I was able to purchase an original mini hoard of these, in order to determine the difference - presumably this is due to a different supply contract.  I am also offering a couple other examples as separate listings.
