    Description

HK-325, Official Medal of the 1905 Lewis & Clark Exposition in Portland, OR, struck in Silver.
Shevlin SH 14-1 S, Swoger 16a. Dies by George Morgan, struck at the Philadelphia Mint as was the rule for precious-metal issues at the time. Mintage not noted, however overall medal sales were apparently fairly limited overall. Shevlin considers this an R-5, with 200 or less remaining. I have always taken such estimates with a large grain of salt, however I am less than 100 miles from where the event took place, and even here near “ground Zero”, this medal is very scarce. This is an honestly worn pocket piece, obviously carried long after the Expo as a souvenir, and apparently original and without damage, which is unusual for a circulated Silver So Called Dollar of any type. Almost all circulated specimens I encounter in Oregon are impaired to some degree, usually cleaned leaving obnoxious hairlines (none on this piece). Shevlin’s catalogue value of 5 in AU-50 is hardly relevant in this case, however simply based upon the difficultly of locating most Silver SCD, my price should prove reasonable to someone.
