This is an
"Official Medal"
sometimes also named a Treasure Island
"So-Called Dollar"
from the
"Golden Gate International Exposition"
that was held in San Francisco Bay February 18, through October 29, 1939.
The Federal Works Projects Administration
(W.P.A.)
built Treasure Island from land fill on the long-time navigational hazard, Yerba Buena Shoals, near Yerba Buena Island in San Francisco Bay. It was originally intended to house an Airport, to be used by the famed Pan-American Airways
"Clipper Ship"
service to the orient. The 400-acre island was used for the Exposition instead, and then became a famous United States Navy base during and after World War II.
The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge
(as opposed to the Golden Gate Bridge, which is pictured on the medal)
is built in two parts, the first from Oakland to Yerba Buena Island and then from the Island to San Francisco, so access to Treasure Island and the Exposition was by automobile.

There are four minor varieties of this die. Called
“waves”, “dots”,
“slashes”
and
“no waves”
. This one is the
“slashes”
variety.
The So-Called Dollar:
A veteran example, someone carried this as a pocket piece for a long time. It remains fully original and has never been cleaned. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
