1939 GOLDEN GATE INTERNATIONAL Exposition SO-CALLED Petroleum DOLLAR Type 2 of 5
    Description
    This is a 1939
    "Petroleum Dollar"
    also called a
    "So-Called Dollar"
    from the 1939-1940
    "Golden Gate International Exposition"
that was held on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. These were available at the Petroleum Exhibit at the fair.
The Expo was held to celebrate the recent completion of the two famous bridges across San Francisco Bay. The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was completed in 1936 and the Golden Gate Bridge leading to Marin County was finished in 1937.
    The Federal Works Projects Administration
    (W.P.A.)
built Treasure Island from land fill on the long-time navigational hazard, Yerba Buena Shoals, near Yerba Buena Island in San Francisco Bay. It was originally intended to house an Airport, to be used by the famed Pan-American Airways
    "Clipper Ship"
service to the orient. The 400-acre island was used for the Exposition instead, and then became a famous United States Navy base during and after World War II.
Weight: 13.00 Gram, 35 Millimeter, Gilt Bronze.

    Obverse:
GOLDEN GATE • INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION • PETROLEUM EXHIBIT • 1939 • Oil Derrick.
The 1939 date comes in 5 minor varieties. This is the second obverse with the
    "footed one"
a crossbar at the base of the 1 in the date. The other two obverses had none.
    Reverse:
A DOLLAR SPENT • FOR PETROLEUM PRODUCTS • NEVER STOPS CIRCULATING. • IT PAYS FOR WAGES, TAXES, • MATERIALS AND BRINGS • COUNTLESS BENEFITS TO • EVERY BUSINESS • Stars at top and bottom.
This is the first of four reverse dies. It has a long T in the word SPENT. The others have minor differences. The five varieties are listed in the Shevlin and Hyder book as SH-23-11 and 11.1 through 11.4. This one is SH-23-11.1.
    The So-Called Dollar:
A wounded warrior, it has some serious dings as well as some spots and marks. There is still some of the gilt there though and it is fully original, never cleaned. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
