    Description

    Medals of various compositions were struck for the dedication of the Santa Monica Breakwater in 1933. This example of the 1933 Santa Monica Breakwater Medal was struck in aluminum and is listed as HK-687 in the Hibler-Kappen reference on So-Called Dollars. Some of the aluminum medals were anodized in varying colors, and almost all of which are seen with holes. This 1933 Santa Monica Breakwater Blue Anodized HK-687 Medal has been graded MS66 by NGC and is encapsulated in a newer-style edge-view holder. The design is one of the more popular designs seen on so-called dollars with the sunbathing female with the amusement park on the obverse and the pier and harbor on the reverse. The piece is a bright vibrant blue anodized aluminum which is quite eye appealing. A scratch in the center of the reverse side is of note, but seemingly wasn’t major enough to concern the graders. Those more familiar with this issue will note that they often have various numbers on the bottom, though the significance of the numbers seems to have been lost to history; this piece is marked L.A.R.S. CO. 11 at the bottom. A wonderful bright blue example of this popular so-called dollar.
