Description
This very attractive medal was produced to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the invention of the reaper by Cyrus McCormick. One side (first photo) features the bust of McCormick, with his full name
CYRUS HALL McCORMICK
along the upper rim, his birth and death years (1809; 1884) to the left of the bust, and the phrase
INVENTOR OF THE REAPER
to the right of the bust. The other side shows a horse-drawn reaper in use, with
INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER COMPANY
along the upper rim
and
CENTENNIAL OF THE REAPER 1831-1931
below the image. The name of the manufacturer (Medallic Art Co.) is stamped into the edge.
The medal was well-struck with great detail, with bold design and lettering.
The diameter is nearly 35 mm (1-3/8"), qualifying this medal as a 'so-called dollar' (HK-460), and the composition is bronze.
This medal is in extremely fine condition, with very light wear, toning, and some soiling, and it is very bright.
The illustrations in this listing are photos of the actual item being offered for sale, serving as part of the description. NOTE: The actual medal is much brighter and more attractive than evident in the photos.
