Description
Souvenir medallion from the 1905 Lewis & Clark Exposition in Portland, Oregon, catalogued as SH 14-6 in Jeff Shevlin's text on West Coast Expositions. The closest H-K equivalent is HK-332a. 38mm, Jeff's so-called "Stern Heads" die, an ampersand ("&") separating the names Lewis and Clark. This appears to be a doubled or tripled die, most noticeable on the feather Clark’s cap, which clearly shows three distinct “layers”.
Doubling also visible on the duo’s faces.
That none shows elsewhere leads me to believe that this is not machine doubling, and that the central motif of the busts of Lewis & Clark was entered into the die separately from the lettering, etc. Could prove an interesting research project for someone.
A significantly scarcer design (R-6), even here in Oregon - I sit perhaps only 80 miles from the site of the Expo itself and see very few. Choice Extremely Fine, just enough wear to remove the Gold-plating, no damage or heavy marks. Valued in Jeff's book at in EF.
