HK-245, a souvenir of the 1894 California Mid-Winter Exposition in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The so-called "Official Medal", but as the second edition of HK points out, no such terminology was used by the Expo. In any case, the use of the California State Seal and reverse title suggest that this should be considered the main medallion intended as a souvenir of the event. Also catalogued in Jeff Shelin's new text on West Coast Expositions as SH 7-1 at in EF.  These tend to be marginally scarce overall especially if problem free, and are very scarce Unc, rare in Gem BU.  This example is a problem free Extremely Fine, which is unusual in itself. Most circulated pieces have problems such as spots, scratches or having been badly cleaned, which this has not. Obviously, most distributed served their intended purpose as pocket-piece souvenirs of the event; I suspect a large number may also have been lost in the subsequent 1906 Earthquake & Fire disaster as people abandoned their homes without taking minor possessions.
