    Description

Rare High Grade & Looks Red!
1776-Dated Dickeson Continental Currency Dollar Medal
    1962 Bashlow Restrike, HK-853A, Bronze
    NGC MS66 RB PL
This is an impressive specimen. Struck from freshly polished dies (the Bashlow dies were polished several times during production), the surfaces are like glass, and we don't see any contact marks on either side. This piece is essentially as-struck, and, save for a single dollop of plum patina on the reverse the surfaces are bright, brick red. This toning is typical and is the result of being housed in the original cellophane and paper envelope for decades. This piece seems like it qualifies as Red, to us. Having handled most of the Red pieces that have been certified, we are in a good position to judge! However, we would rather sell a PQ coin that one that is maxed out from re-submissions. Few pieces survive in this condition. Delightful!
In celebration of the US Philadelphia Centennial in 1876, the famous 19th Century doctor and numismatist, Montroville W. Dickeson, created struck copies, in silver, white metal, and copper, of the 1776 Continental Dollar. In 1961, Q. David Bower's Empire Coin Company acquired the original Dickeson dies and commissioned 7,200 white metal restrikes to be struck in England from transfer copies of those dies. In 1962, Robert Bashlow commissioned another round of restrikes from another set of copy dies in Silver, Bronze, and Brass. A curved defect in the dentils just left of the date is the most reliable diagnostic of the Bashlow Restrikes.
